The ancient art of sumo will be on full display in the Ozarks as three title-winning ๐—จ๐—ฆ๐—” ๐—ฆ๐˜‚๐—บ๐—ผ wrestlers battle it out on the festival stage. Witness their strength and agility up close and personal and maybe even challenge one of these champions to a match.
๐—จ๐˜‡๐˜‚๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜‚, a yosakoi dance ensemble from San Joseโ€™s Japantown, performs an energetic style of dance that blends traditional and modern Japanese movements and music.
๐—ฌ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜‚ ๐—œ๐˜€๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฎ is a storyteller and magician originally from Ube, Japan. Ishida combines traditional Japanese theatre, music, origami, magic and storytelling to bring the enchanting land of Japan to his audiences.
๐—ฆ๐—ฒ๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—–๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ฏ๐—ฎ is a world-renowned shodo artist from Japan’s Fukushima prefecture. Her large-scale calligraphy performances are inspired by hope and peace.
Favorite performers returning to the festival include ๐—ฆ๐˜. ๐—Ÿ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐—ข๐˜€๐˜‚๐˜„๐—ฎ ๐—ง๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ธ๐—ผ, ensemble drummers; ๐—ž๐—ถ๐˜‡๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ฎ, Springfieldโ€™s Japan America friendship club; ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜†โ€™๐˜€ ๐—ž๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฝ๐—ผ ๐—ž๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ ๐—ฆ๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ผ๐˜€ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—ฆ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜๐—ต๐˜„๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜ ๐— ๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ถ, martial arts demonstrators; ๐—ฆ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ฑ ๐—–๐—ผ๐˜€๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜†, costume role play demonstrators; and ๐—ž๐—ถ๐—ฅ๐—ฎ ๐—ž๐—ถ๐—ฅ๐—ฎ ๐—ฆ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ฑ, cosplay dance team.
In addition to numerous vendor and artisan booths featuring wares authentic to Japanese culture, guests will enjoy the ๐—ก๐—ถ๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ฏ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ธ๐—ฎ ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜ (Japanese culture experience tent) where you can meet delegate from our Japanese sister city, Isesaki, the ๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ถ๐˜†๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ฎ๐˜€๐—ต๐—ถ ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐˜€ (souvenirs and snacks tents), and ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€.
The festival offers cultural opportunities geared toward children including an activity area featuring traditional Japanese games and crafts led by Japanese language students from ๐—ž๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ธ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—ผ ๐—›๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ต ๐—ฆ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—น. These opportunities end by dusk each evening.
Workshop opportunities include amezaiku, bonsai, kokedama, ikebana, kintsugi and martial arts.

Beginning at dusk on Friday and Saturday, September 8 and 9, hundreds of torches light the garden pathways and soft Japanese music fills the air to create a romantic strolling atmosphere.
Purchase a ๐˜„๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ป and set your dreams afloat on one of the koi ponds.
๐—–๐—ผ๐˜€๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜† ๐——๐—ฎ๐˜† in partnership with ๐—ฆ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ฑ ๐—–๐—ผ๐˜€๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜† is Sunday, September 10. Come to the festival in your cosplay (costume role play) to receive $4 admission.

Hundreds of volunteers are needed to work the Japanese Fall Festival; volunteers receive free entry to the festival on the day of their shift.

Springfield Sister Cities Association donates half of the Japanese Fall Festivalโ€™s admission proceeds to the maintenance and development of the Mizumoto Japanese Stroll Garden, sponsored by Simmons Bank. The remaining proceeds benefit cultural programs which further Springfield Sister Cities Associationโ€™s mission of โ€œPeace through People.โ€
