Springfield, MO – [March 7, 2025] – Mid-West Family Broadcasting proudly participated in the Missouri Broadcasters Association’s (MBA) Capitol Hill visits this week, advocating for the future of local radio. As part of the MBA’s Legislative Committee and Board of Directors, MWF General Manager Brian Tyndall joined industry leaders in meeting with Missouri’s Congressional delegation to highlight the vital role broadcasters play in their communities.
The MBA delegation met with Missouri’s eight Representatives and two Senators, sharing compelling stories of local broadcasters’ impact, including fundraising and non-profit support in the Ozarks and around the state and delivering life-saving severe weather coverage. These efforts set local radio apart from Big Tech, reinforcing its indispensable role in American life. Among the key issues discussed:
The Fight to Preserve AM Radio
As automakers move to eliminate AM radio from vehicles, Mid-West Family Broadcasting and the MBA urge Congress to pass the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act (S. 315, H.R. 979). AM radio remains a cornerstone of public safety, providing emergency alerts when power and cell networks fail. With millions relying on AM for news, weather updates, and agricultural reports, removing this feature endangers public access to critical information.
Defending Local Ownership
For over 80 years, outdated Federal Communications Commission (FCC) ownership regulations have restricted the growth of local broadcasters while allowing Big Tech and global streaming services to operate unchecked. The MBA is pushing for modernization of these rules to ensure that local radio and TV stations can continue providing essential news, sports, and community programming.
Opposing a Performance Tax
Congress must reject the American Music Fairness Act (H.R. 861, S. 326), which would impose burdensome fees on local radio stations simply for playing music. Radio has long been the industry’s greatest promotional tool, driving billions in revenue for record labels and artists. The passage of a performance tax would threaten local jobs and limit exposure for emerging musicians.
Protecting Advertising Revenue
Advertising supports local businesses and keeps radio free for listeners. Proposed tax changes that would make advertising more expensive threaten small businesses, local economies, and the very funding that enables broadcasters to serve their communities.
“Our industry is at a critical crossroads,” said Brian Tyndall, General Manager of Mid-West Family Broadcasting and MBA Board Member. “We’re advocating for policies that protect free, local radio, ensuring we can continue to serve our listeners with vital news, emergency information, and entertainment. I am very happy to report that we received strong support from our state legislators who recognize the importance of local broadcasters and support legislation that allows us to compete and thrive.”
Mid-West Family Broadcasting remains committed to delivering high-quality, community-focused content to the Ozarks. As Congress considers these crucial issues, we urge listeners and local businesses to support their local radio stations and ensure they remain a vibrant part of our communities.
