Council of Churches of the Ozarks recently shared the following on their Facebook page…
“…While our Safe to Sleep shelter is staffed by a small team, volunteers make it possible to care for women experiencing homelessness seven nights a week; volunteer support since Covid has fallen 50%.
“With volunteer support, we’re able to shelter over 100 women each month, a third of whom are first time guests,” says the program’s director, Kelly Harris. “Safe to Sleep relies on committed overnight volunteers to ensure we can be open every night of the year to offer a safe place for so many vulnerable women in our community.”
Safe to sleep is the only low-barrier shelter for women in Southern Missouri, and has provided emergency overnight shelter for over 3,700 women in need since 2011. Additionally, Safe to Sleep offers every guest case management services, which connect them with resources for sustainable housing, employment, and health care.

On average, more than 2,000 volunteers annually provide food, clothing, shelter, safety, and security to more than 80,000 Southwest Missourians. Our programs continue to grow and change to meet the needs of our community, as such, we are in constant need of volunteers. We have one-time, recurring, and group opportunities for all ages. We would love for you to join our team! – Council of Churches of the Ozarks
